Pan.bio, a Boston-based genomics and AI company working to close the representation gap in global genomic data, today announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry Development Agency (MPIDA) under Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health. Signed at a ceremony in Tashkent on October 21, the MoU establishes a framework for scientific and academic collaboration between the two organizations in genomic research.

Most of the world’s genomic data still comes from a handful of populations. Research that reflects Uzbekistan’s own population, carried out on strong ethical foundations, can help make sure that advances in precision medicine reach the people of Uzbekistan.

Under the MoU, Pan.bio and MPIDA intend to collaborate in areas including:

  • International scientific expertise: senior specialists in genomics, bioethics and data protection, brought in by Pan.bio to share research experience and lessons learned from genome initiatives in other countries
  • Ethical and responsible research: best practice in informed consent, privacy and the responsible use of genomic data in research
  • Scientific and academic exchange: joint expert workshops and knowledge sharing on genomic research

Genomic research is only as useful as the populations it represents, and today most of it comes from a small part of the world. This MoU is our commitment to working alongside MPIDA on research that reflects the people of Uzbekistan, carried out to the highest ethical and scientific standards.

Ahmad Jadallah, CEO of Pan.bio

Genomic research is at the forefront of the future of biopharmaceutical innovation, driving new discoveries, advancing precision medicine, and opening pathways to the development of more effective treatments. Realising its full potential requires strong ethical principles, responsible research practices, and clear regulatory frameworks. Our partnership with Pan.bio will provide an opportunity to draw on international experience, learn from regulatory and governance challenges faced by other countries, and avoid repeating past mistakes.

Dr. Abdulla Azizov, Chairman of MPIDA and First Deputy Minister of Health

As a next step, the two organizations will hold the first in a series of joint expert workshops on genomic research and research ethics over the coming months.
